Joan Stevens

October 20, 1929 — December 7, 2020

Joan Stevens passed peacefully from this earth at her home in the presence of family on Monday afternoon, December 7, 2020.  She was 91 years young.

She was born Joan Elaine Richards on Sunday, October 20, 1929, the youngest daughter to Lewis W. and Myrtle D. (Roberson) Richards in Fairfax, Oklahoma. Growing up in Fairfax, she received her education in the Fairfax School system.

One day walking with a friend down Main Street a young man home from the Army, Clarence “Gabby” Stevens, caught her eye. He pulled up and asked the girls if they would like a ride. The girls said “Yes”, and it was love at first sight for Joan and Clarence. They began dating and soon traveled to Sedan, Kansas on Monday, April 1, 1946 where they were wed.

After they married, they made their home in Borger, Texas where Clarence worked at Phillips and Joan was a devoted wife, homemaker, and mother. To this union was added two precious daughters, Karren and Sharon.  She dedicated her life to the care of her husband and daughters, and in later years her grandchildren whom she helped raised.  She was blessed with several amazing grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren and prayed for them daily.

Joan loved to cook and made many excellent meals.  She took pride in having a neat clean home for her girls.  The happy family made their home in Borger, Texas for thirty-eight years before Clarence retired.  In 1984 the couple moved to Fairfax, where they attended First Osage Baptist Church. They were married almost 66 years before Clarence passed on February 2, 2012.  They had a great life together and were hardly ever apart.

In heaven Joan reunited with the love of her life, Clarence as well as her daughters: Sharon Stevens, Karren Sartin and son-in-law Tim Sartin; granddaughter Kristen Armstrong; her parents, and her sister Bertha Irons.

She will be warmly remembered by her many grandchildren:  Warren “Scott” Burns of Wynona, Okla.; Danny (Linda) Watson of Borger, Texas; Joe Bob (Heather) Kinnaman of Shamrock, Texas; Cory (Audrey) Kinnaman of Wheeler, Texas; Donita Harris of Hollywood, Florida; Steven Been of Dallas, Texas; Karrissa (Adam) McNew of Amarillo, Texas; Shawn (Betty) Watson of Panhandle, Texas; and Mark (Kimberly) Watson of Fritch, Texas.       Also survived by numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a nephew and niece; and many beloved friends and other extended family.

Friends and family will be received on Thursday, December 10, 2020 from 2 to 7pm at Hunsaker Wooten Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 2pm Friday, December 11, 2020 at the New Hope Christian Church in Fairfax with Pastor Ronnie Smith officiating.  Casket bearers will be her grandchildren. Interment will follow at the Fairfax City Cemetery where she will rest beside her husband.

Out of respect for public health and safety, Joan’s family has requested everyone who attends the service to wear face masks and respect social distancing rules per the CDC guidelines.
Arrangements are under the caring direction of Hunsaker Wooten Funeral Home of Fairfax.
