Gerald Ferguson

December 18, 1933 — July 13, 2021

Fairfax

Gerald Dean Ferguson (Fergy) resident of Fairfax, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday July 13th, 2021.

Gerald was born in Freedom, Okla. on December 18th,1933 to John Elsworth and Hazel Anna (Walker) Ferguson. He was the youngest of 4 children. He grew up and attended school at Houston Valley in Freedom, Okla. Gerald helped his parents on the farm in his younger years.

On September 4th, 1952 he married Margie Rameriz in Clovis, New Mexico. Early in their marriage they lived on the 10,000 acre May Ranch northwest of Alva, where he was a ranch foreman. Gerald was featured in the Oklahoman Magazine in 1958 for being one of the first ranches to gather cattle by airplane. He worked for his sister and brother-in-law’s cement company building bridges on the interstates of Oklahoma. After relocating to Burbank, in 1972 Gerald helped build the Kaw Dam along with his son Marty. He retired in 1993 after 18 years of service, from OG&E Sooner Plant in Red Rock where he worked in the coal yard as a foreman.

After retiring Gerald and Marge would enjoy time with family and loved to attend any function they could that involved their grandchildren. After Marge’s passing in 2012, Gerald would continue on supporting his grandchildren and enjoyed every minute of it. When he wasn’t supporting his grandchildren, you could find him in a field enjoying one of his favorite hobbies, farming. Gerald farmed wheat and soy beans until he was 85 years old.

He loved to hang out at the Texaco, Bill Southern’s shop on main street, and the golf course. He enjoyed hearing all the town gossip and had many people of Fairfax who cared about him. If he didn’t make his daily visits to these places, people were always calling his daughters wondering where he was. If you were ever stuck behind him on the road, you better hope you weren’t in a hurry because he chose to drive at a slow idle. A tank of gas would last the man at least 6 months.

Gerald is survived by his 7 children. Debbie Ferguson, of Freedom Oklahoma. Marty Ferguson, of Medford Oklahoma. Amber Townsend of Martinez Georgia. Gidget Ferguson of Fairfax. Nikki Quattlebaum. Casey Tucker and husband Jeff of Fairfax, & Dusty Rice and husband Joe, also of Fairfax; 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren with one more on the way.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge, of 59 years. His parents, brother Gene Ferguson of Freedom Okla., sisters Betty Ledford of Cement Okla., Helen Brown of Hobbs New Mexico, and two son-in-law’s Mick Ferguson of Freedom Okla. and Dennis Townsend of Martinez Georgia.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 4pm, Sunday July 18th at the New Hope Church in Fairfax with Pastor Ronnie Smith officiating. Graveside services will be at 1pm, on Monday July the 19th at the Freedom Cemetery in Freedom Okla. with his nephew Frank Ledford as officiant.

Pallbearers are Marty Ferguson, Stanley Irving, Bradley Irving, Brayden Tucker, Devin Ferguson, and Camblin Martin. Honorary Pallbearers are David Hazen, Bill Southern, Henry Johnston, and Ted Hazelbaker.

If you never knew him, you missed out. But if you did know him, his grandson said it best, he was funny, caring, generous, and the best jokester and prankster around. To know him was to love him. Rest high dad and enjoy mom again.
