Maxine Hughes

December 20, 1929 — May 29, 2020

Fairfax

Gloria Maxine (Dennis) Hughes passed peacefully from this life on Friday morning, May 29, 2020 at the age of 90. She was in her home surrounded by her family. Maxine was born in Pampa, Texas on December 20,1929 to R.D. and Lucille Dennis.

Maxine was a homemaker, though she worked outside the home at different times in her life, her passion was her home and family. She kept her home spotless and always had home cooked meals ready like clockwork. Maxine had a sweet tooth that could not be satisfied, so she always had homemade pies, cakes and all things chocolate and Dr. Pepper readily available for anyone who stopped in for a visit.

On February 16, 1947 Bob and Maxine were married in Burbank, Okla. Bob and Maxine moved to Fairfax and established their home in 1950. They had just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary when Bob passed February 17, 2019.

Bob and Maxine took their home on the road after his retirement and they spent over 20 years traveling from Fairfax to Branson to South Texas and back to Fairfax in their 5th-wheel.

Maxine was called “Granny” by her six grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She always kept up on everything they did, and always had enough “worry” for each one.

Maxine always had something to do. She was an avid reader, master crocheter, loved to work in her yard, hand feed squirrels in her yard, and paint anything and everything—multiple times. She had a love for her pets and over the years spoiled many dogs.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, one sister Geri Hall, and one great-grandson Holden Peckenpaugh.

Today Maxine is survived by her son Carl Hughes and wife Sherry of Fairfax, two daughters: Shirley Peckenpaugh and husband Loris of Skedee, Vickie Bump and husband Steve of Tulsa. Six grandchildren, Russell Hughes and wife Kristie, Sharla Van Winkle and husband Cal, Shelly Bump and husband Scott Baker, Lee Peckenpaugh and wife Mary, Stacy Womack and husband Jimmy, Tracy Nesselrode and husband Robert, and 9 great-grandchildren. One sister Patricia Tadlock one brother-in-law Jim Hughes, two sisters’-in-law, Judy McKee and Betty Jackson.

Maxine’s family would like to say “thank-you” to Physicians Choice Hospice.
