Shirlee Hinsley

March 7, 1935 — March 18, 2023

Hominy

Shirlee Nadine Hinsley, also known as “Sport”, age 88, of Hominy, Oklahoma, entered God’s kingdom at her home on Saturday, March 18, 2023. She was born on March 7, 1935, to A.C. “Curly” and Imogene Robinett.

Shirlee, the most loving and devoted wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother is survived by her husband, Harold; sisters, Sandra and Bobbie; daughters, Terry and Kimberlee; granddaughters, Rebal, Meagan, and Morgan; grandsons, Clay and Amos; great-granddaughters, Jerica, Arien, Laura, Bethany, Isabella, Elisabeth, and Olivia; great-grandsons, Preston, Ashton, and Carter; great-great-granddaughter, London; and great-great-grandson, Zeppelin.

Shirlee is preceded in death by her dad, A.C. “Curly” Robinett; her mother, Imogene Robinett; first husband, Leon DeRossett; second husband, Terry Stough; son, Clay DeRossett; and sister, Carmelita “Tom” Locke.

Shirlee was born in Hominy, Oklahoma in 1935 and was the oldest of 4 girls, Carmelita “Tom”, Sandra, and Bobbie Rae. Shirlee went to many schools throughout the years and moved throughout Oklahoma often due to the work her daddy did for the railroad. She would ride her horse “Old Bessie” to and from school each day, which she cherished and loved. She played on the basketball teams when she was in school and every year that she played, the school she was attending, would make it to the state championships.

Shirlee was a jack of all trades when it came to her life and career. Shirlee owned beauty shops, and cafes, and retired as a professional truck driver. Shirlee started beauty school in 1961 at Paul’s Beauty College in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. That was the beginning of her success as a beautician. She opened beauty shops everywhere she went, and, in every state, she lived in throughout the years.

Shirlee and her second husband, Terry Stough, started driving gravel trucks together which was the start of her long career as a professional truck driver. She was a professional driver for 36 years and she developed a name for herself and made history in the trucking industry along the way. Shirlee retired from JB Hunt in 2007. She was the first woman trainer that JB Hunt had and drove over a million miles accident-free.

When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, cooking, baking, crocheting, going to garage sales, and just making memories with the people she loved most. Shirlee’s house always had an open door, and she was a major socialite. She welcomed anybody and everybody. Everyone always knew they could come to her, and her house and she would ensure they had a safe place to stay, food to eat, and great company to enjoy.

Shirlee had the personality and natural charisma to make friends no matter the situation, and her laugh was infectious to everyone around her. A woman of many stories, some factual and others not so factual, all that would draw out inspiring conclusions.

As a woman of true integrity, Shirlee would never budge under any circumstances, regardless of if anyone had any idea what her words meant. A woman with a simple taste of leggings and t-shirts, she focused on providing her family with the best life possible without worrying about herself.

Shirlee was truly a great woman whose impact will be forever felt by her family, which loves her dearly. She was a selfless woman whose passing left an unfillable gap in the hearts of her loved ones. Her ability to sacrifice, provide, support, forgive, and love will be forever engrained in all she knew.

A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on April 14 at New Hope Christian Fellowship, 161 North 5th Street, Fairfax, Oklahoma.
