Obituary

Rita Jo “Jody” Washabaugh Badley, long time resident of the Sunny Slope area of Osage County departed this earth on September 12, 2026, surrounded by her family at her home. She was 83 years old.

Jody was born on June 9, 1943, at Ponca City, to Norman Washabaugh and Edna Merle McKinley. Jody was a granddaughter of Osage original allottees, John McKinley and Maude Blackbird. Her Osage name is Cle-to-me. She was raised in the Fairfax and Shidler areas by the Clara Anderson family. She was a 1961 graduate of Shider High School where she was a 4 year letterman on the basketball team, played the clarinet, and was also a baton twirler. She attended the University of Central Oklahoma, until her marriage to Jesse Ronald “Ron” Badley on August 17, 1962, in Webb City, Oklahoma. They promptly departed the ceremony to attend a rodeo in Kansas where her new husband was entered in the bull riding. They shared a love of livestock and moved to her Grandmother Maude’s allotment in 1966 and began a modest commercial cow-calf, farming, hay, and pecan operation. Through determination, hard work, and sacrifice they developed a home place they hoped their family could be proud of in the future.

Jody was a devoted mother to her children and traveled many miles with them to 4-H events, livestock shows, horse events, track meets, and basketball games. She always packed an ice chest of food and drink for anyone who wanted something to eat. She had the same devotion to her grandchildren. Jody became a Hominy Buck fan and looked forward to football season when the grandkids were in high school.

Jody helped take care of the family cow-calf operation by feeding, assigning work, and helping to sort calves when weaning time came around even in her later years. She loved animals including her Rat terrier dog, Josie, and Siamese cat, Brownie.

She is survived by her son and daughter, Jesse Badley Jr. and Jacqueline Badley, of the Sunny Slope area; two grandsons, Jesse Badley III and partner Cassie Owens, and Perry Joe Badley, all of Fairfax and two sisters Julia Notah and Melissa Standridge. She is also survived by special friend, Linda Edwards, special niece Shelly Jo Hutchison, and special “son” Jim Hadlock and Badley family in laws, friends, and other extended family.

Jody was predeceased by her parents, her caregiving family, her husband and siblings Mollie Ann McKinley, John Norman Washabaugh, Donald Wayne Carpenter, Jeffrey Steven DuVall, Bonnie DuVall Whitekiller, Sam Notah, Wayne Anderson, Roberta” Nonie” Harrison, Edna Nita Crawford, and Robert Anderson.

A traditional service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Grayhorse Chapel in rural Fairfax, Oklahoma, with John Shaw and Taos Barrone officiating. Burial will follow immediately at the Grayhorse Cemetery under the direction of Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home, Fairfax. A traditional Osage dinner will be provided after the burial at the Grayhorse Community Building.

In lieu of flowers, donations made be made in Jody’s name to St. Jude Children’s hospital or any animal shelter. Expressions of condolence at www.hunsakerwootenfuneralhome.com
