Obituary

Richard "Dickie" Lee Johnston, age 81, passed from this life on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at his home in Grayhorse. He was a lifelong resident of Fairfax, Oklahoma and the Grayhorse area, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a Vietnam Veteran and just a good ol' cowboy.

Richard was born on January 17, 1945, in the Hamill Hospital, to parents Henry Samuel Johnston, Sr. and Sylvia Tereasa (Carpenter) Johnston. He was the youngest of three children, joining sister Linda and brother Henry. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School before transferring to Fairfax Public Schools, where he would meet his wife Sherry and graduate a Fairfax Red Devil, Class of 1963.

Dickie married Sherry Ann Duggins on Friday, August 28, 1964, in Fairfax. They were graced with 56 years of marriage, during which they chose to complete their family with two children, JohnPaul and Jill.

In August 1966, Dickie was drafted into the Army. He served overseas in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. He would later return home to complete his service as a Reserve until being honorably discharged in 1972.

Raised around horses from an early age, he naturally took to roping and the cowboy way of life, spending many meaningful years working on various ranches in the area. Also, during this time, he taught himself to weld and later obtained a shop by the football field that would become his place of business for numerous years.

While he found joy in many places, there was one spot where it's been said you could quite literally set your watch by him-Sundowns. There he could be found catching up with dear friends over a cold beer, lining up a shot on the pool table, or singing "Milk Cow Blues" and "Walking the Floor Over You" during karaoke night. Cooking was another pastime that Dickie thoroughly cherished throughout his life. Whether it was a fish fry or barbecuing. He found much enjoyment in feeding his family and friends and made sure no one left hungry.

Lastly, after all the years of dependable hard work and fun times, he was able to live out the final years of his life relaxing at home. He spent countless hours watching a multitude of Western movies and the Cowboy Channel which would always bring a smile to his face, as he reminisced about the various rodeos and roping's he attended and his true glory days of being a cowboy.

Richard is survived by his son JohnPaul and daughter Jill; his brother Henry Johnston, Jr., and wife Ginger; sister-in-law Barbara Duggins; nieces and nephews: Mary Louise Jordan, Hank Johnston, McKale Montgomery, Mark, James, Patrick, Stephanie, Kirk, and Kerri Dawn.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sherry; parents Henry and Sylvia; an infant daughter; sister Linda Louise Kothe; two brothers-in-law Tommy and Joe Duggins. And Rascal, the privileged pet.

Graveside service with military honors was held Friday, August 28, at Grayhorse Cemetery with Father Louis Obirleze officiating.

In remembrance of Richard, memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 333 South 8th Street, Fairfax, OK 74637.
