Ottaway Stroud, longtime Fairfax resident, passed Monday, August 17, 2009 at the Fairfax Manor Nursing Home. She was 88. Mrs. Stroud was born June 21, 1921 at Booneville, Arkansas, the daughter of Arthur Thomas Cooper and Ozella Brooks Cooper. She graduated from the Fairfax High School and then earned her teaching certificate. She taught school for a short time in a one room country school in Arkansas. She had attended the Ralston First Baptist Church and her enjoyments included sewing, quilting, fishing, cooking and her family. Ottaway was married to Hughes Hampton in 1946. She was later married to Cecil Stroud on March 22, 1975 in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. She is survived by her three children, Mary Longbottom, Atlantic Beach, Florida, David Hampton, Golden, Missouri and Emelia Hampton of Fairfax; 3 grandchildren, Gene Smith, Anna Sioux and Jonathan; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one step-son, Jim Stroud and one step grandson, Chad Stroud. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 husbands; 2 brothers, Robert Cooper and Reece Cooper. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Fairfax Cemetery with Rev. George Weston presiding. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home.
