Nelda Shafer

November 9, 1940 — March 29, 2016

Nelda June Shafer of Fairfax went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Fairfax Hospital. She was 75.
Nelda was born in Ralston, OK, November 9, 1940 the daughter of Virgil and Rhoda Knight McKinney. She moved to Fairfax as a young child and graduated from Fairfax High School. Nelda married Claude Shafer in Jay, Oklahoma. They had three daughters: Sherri Claudette and Melanie. Later, Nel returned to college and graduated from Oklahoma State University. She began her teaching career teaching 4th grade in Fairfax. She retired after 32 wonderful years to be a caregiver for her husband and went on to care for many others.
Nelda loved the Lord. She was a member of the First Assembly of God, where she taught Sunday school and served on the board. Nel was a woman of great faith and shared the love of God with all she met-through giving what she thought would help, a kind word, a hug and she always has been a great encourager and touched many lives. She considered it an honor when she supervised the placing of Memorial Day flags on Veteran's graves.
She loved people and loved having them in her home where she cooked many meals and enjoyed it! Nel was always ready for a game of "farce."
She was an avid reader. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, spending time with her sisters and best friends J Berry and Jackie Harrison, substituting and teaching summer school at Woodland Elementary but most of all she loved spoiling her grandsons!
She is survived by her daughter, Claudette Mashburn and husband, James, two grandsons, Jim, Ed and Shafe Michael Mashburn of Fairfax.
Five Sisters, Jolene Lyon and husband Bob of Paden, OK, Wanda and Linda McKinney of Fairfax, Barbara Pfister and husband Jack of Bella Vista, AR Sheila Robertson and husband Hobie of Fairfax.
Nieces Rhonda Terronez and Lindsay Pfister. Nephews, Royce Lyon, Sam L. McKinney, Darren McKinney and Alex Pfister.
Nine great nieces and nephews and seven great-great nieces and nephews. Her special extended family Mike Mashburn, Jay Young and Jami Burgess.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Claude Shafer, two daughters, Sherri and Melanie. One brother, Darrell McKinney. One brother, Darrell McKinney.
Celebration services will be Saturday, April 2, at 1:00 at the HS Auditorium in Fairfax, OK. Interment will be in the Fairfax Cemetery under the direction of Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home.
Casket bearers will be: Jim Ed Mashburn, Shafe Mashburn, Darren McKinney, Sam L. McKinney, Royce Lyon and Alex Pfister.
Honorary Casket bearers will be Sandy Parker, J Berry Harrison, Jay Young, Ralph Ellis, Mike Adams and Bobby Simma.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Fairfax, Public Library or Woodland Elementary Library.
