Funeral Services for Lula (Lu) Ellen Shaffer Zink Means will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the Burbank First Baptist Church with the Pastors Dennis Wildman and Chris Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairfax Cemetery under the direction of the Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home. Friends may leave online condolences at www.husakerwootenfuneralhome.com.

Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m., to 8:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home. The family has suggested memorials to the Burbank First Baptist Church and contributions may be left at the Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home.

Lula (Lu) passed away November 6, 2016 at the Fairfax Manor, she was 93 years young. Lu was born May 17, 1923 in Doga Community west of Fairfax. She was the daughter of Joseph Calvin and Mellicca Myrtle (Magee) Shaffer. She attended school at Middle Doga with Hubert Thomas as her first teacher. She graduated from Fairfax High School in 1941.

Mrs. Means worked in the Fairfax Telephone office for several years and was also an operator in San Diego, California during WW II, while her husband, Jess Kirk was in the Navy. She married Jess W. Kirk on December 12, 1941 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. They had one son John Raymond Kirk, born in 1945. The couple later divorced.

On May 20, 1947 she married Clarence (Speck) Zink at Sedan, Kansas. They had two daughters. They enjoyed 46 years together until his death on December 25, 1993. They lived on Middle Doga Road west of Fairfax for 20 years and moved to Grainola for another 20 years.

Lu worked in Osage County Aging Program from their beginning in 1975 until 1989 when she retired. Mrs. Means held several offices in a number of organizations and was instrumental in starting the Osage County AARP Chapter in Pawhuska. She was an officer in the HELP elevated Handicapped Program when it began in Pawhuska. Mrs. Means was a member of the United Community Action Board in Pawnee.

She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Burbank where she served in many capacities (WMU, teaching children, VBS and holding several offices).

Her life was filled with family, friends, church and school activities. She enjoyed several hobbies, sewing, quilting and was an avid reader all her life.

On February 14, 1995 she and John Jackson Mean Jr. were united in marriage at Burbank. They lived in Grainola until moving to Burbank in 1997 when he retired from trucking and farming. Mr. Means died in January 2004.

She is survived by two daughters, Connie Jo Sisson and husband Bob of St. Maries, Idaho and Vicki Sue Wickham and husband Bill of Ponca City, Oklahoma; three brothers Virgil Shaffer and wife, Margret of Owasso, Joseph (Joe) Shaffer and wife Alberta of Caldwell, Kansas and Billy Shaffer and wife Karen of Fairfax; one sister Bonnie Jester and husband Shirl of Del City; 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

Grandchildren, Scherry McDowell and husband Mike of Marysville, Washington, Christi Moore and husband Jim of Coral Springs, Florida, Tami Sisson of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Robert Sisson Jr., of Coeur D. Alene, Idaho, Alfred Wickham of Tonkawa and Benjamin Wickham of Ponca City; beloved nieces, nephews and more distant relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 husbands, 2 sisters Ola Parker and Alma Speakman, one son John Kirk, one nephew Wayne Shaffer and one niece Kimberly Shaffer.
