John Long Iii

August 17, 1942 — September 29, 2018

John A. Long III, age 76, died on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. John was born the only child of Nona Mae (Swinford) Long and John A. Long Jr. on August 17th, 1942 in Pryor, Oklahoma.

John grew up in Fairfax and graduated with the Red Devil Class of 1961. In 1962, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Gillispie at Northeastern Oklahoma Junior College and they married on December 22nd of 1962 and made their home in Fairfax. John worked for and later owned and operated Long's Dozer Service until the early 1990's. His time in the Dozer business took him all over the area in the oilfields and on many of the farms and ranches. He worked on several pipeline projects throughout the United States and worked out of Operating Engineers local 627 in Tulsa driving a crane for many years. John was engaged in cattle ranching his entire adult life. John was the third generation of his family to live their life in Osage County and often remarked that he felt a peace on the prairies of his home.

John was active in the community serving as President and many years on the board of Northern Oklahoma Youth Services, was a member 43 years at the Pawhuska Elks Lodge and on the Grayhorse Rural Water board until the time of his death. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Fairfax and a faithful friend of Bill W for the past 26 years. John enjoyed horses from his youth and team roped in his early adult years. Later, he found a passion in golf and enjoyed many rounds with his wife and friends. John passed along his love of the University of Oklahoma Football to his family. He was an avid reader who made a habit of learning throughout his life. He was a staunch Democrat but most of all he was a devoted husband, loyal and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who would help anyone in need.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn, of the home; his daughter, Paula Grimm and Jeff Trayer of Collinsville; son, John A. (Jay) Long IV and wife Sonja of Ponca City; grandchildren, Emily (Jim) Mayse, Justin Grimm, Travis (Lindsey) Thompson, Shelby Grimm, Presley Long and Jack Long along with one great grandson, Benjamin Goodeagle II.
