James Lockett

April 13, 1930 — December 13, 2018

James Lyman (Jim) Lockett, retired Fairfax rancher, died on Thursday, December 13, 2018 after a short illness, at the age of 88.
He was born on April 13, 1930, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Victor and Helen Lockett. He grew up in Fairfax, Oklahoma and graduated from high school there in 1947, going on to get a degree in Business Administration from Oklahoma A&M University in 1951. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He married Ann Mathis in 1951.
They moved to Victorville, CA where he served two years in the U.S. Air Force. In 1953 they returned to Fairfax to run the family cattle ranch. They had four children. In 1977 Jim was elected President of Oklahoma Farm Bureau and held that office for 17 years. He was also on the board of Indian Electric Cooperative for nearly 20 years and on the board of the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Jim's pleasures included the family pets, ham radio, private piloting, golf, boating, and shopping at the Dollar Store and Aldi (he was fond of bargains). "Jazz", as he was known by his grandkids, was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church and a staunch lover of his country and conservative principles.
He was well known for his witty humor, his ability to remember jokes and an uncanny ability to come up with a hilarious comment on the fly. More importantly, he was a walking example of how to treat people with kindness and respect - regardless of who they were or where they came from.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ann, of the home; his daughter Jill Lockett Carey (Jim) of Tulsa, son Jeff Lockett (Shannon) of Fairfax, son James Scott Lockett (Karen) of Fairfax; grandchildren Kristin Lockett Jones, Lindsay Carey Chernosky, Will Lockett, and Sam Lockett; great grandchildren Troy, Ben, Audrey, Elizabith, Emily, Neils, Georgiana, and Lark; and his sister, Madge, of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by Champ, his border collie. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Bill and his son John.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Fairfax, OK. Arrangements will be handled by Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home, Fairfax.
