Dr. Guy Eugene Henning died Sept. 14, at home in Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife of 58 years, Dee, by his side. He was 83 years old.
He was born Feb. 16, 1935 in Thayer, Mo. to Kenneth Lawrence Henning and Suzanna Elizabeth Low.
Guy graduated high school in Hayti, Mo. in 1953 and attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. where he attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1957.
He met Delila "Dee" Buller at a medical missions conference in Little Rock, Ark. and the two were married on Dec 27, 1959.
Guy attained his Medical Doctorate from the University of Arkansas - Little Rock in 1962 and continued his medical training with an internship at Erlanger Hospital at the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga from 1962 to 1963.
He entered the military service, serving as a US Navy Flight Surgeon from 1963-1966.
Dee gave birth to a daughter, Sheryl, in 1964 while the couple was stationed in Key West, Fla.
Upon leaving the service, Dr. Henning held a number of staff positions at several universities including Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.; University of Texas San Antonio - McAllen; East Tennessee State University in Bristol, Tenn.; University of Nevada - Reno; and Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla.
Son Jeffrey was born in 1966 while the family resided in Stillwater.
Primarily engaged in Family Medicine, Dr. Henning also served in private practice in San Antonio, Tex.; Sapulpa, Owasso and Fairfax, Okla.; General Practice with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections in Hominy, Okla.; and Emergency Medicine with the Choctaw Nation in Talahina. Okla.
Dr. Henning held memberships in numbers professional associations including the American Academy of Family Physicians.
In the 1970s, Guy maintained a private pilot's license and hangared a single engine 6-seat plane which he used for family outings and flying missionaries and supplies between the U.S.and Mexico.
Guy also served as a Federal Aviation Administration Senior Aviation Medical Examiner from 1966 to 2001, and as an Aircraft Accident Investigator from 1966 to 1980.
In addition to flying, Guy and his family also loved to find new places to backpack and hike. While living in Nevada, the family also took up cross country and downhill skiing.
Even though the family moved frequently, Guy was active in local church congregations, serving as an ordained deacon in the Baptist Church, choir member and in other ministries. While in San Antonio, the family provided a home to recovering addicts through a church rehab ministry, and also hosted visiting missionaries.
Later in his career, Guy and Dee moved to rural Osage County, Okla. outside of Fairfax where they operated a Hereford cattle ranch. The property provided an opportunity to tinker with tractors, take care of his aging parents, and a place for their grandchildren to roam.
Following retirement, Guy and Dee sold their property and moved to The Baptist Village in Owasso. Okla. There, they attended First Baptist Church of Owasso and Guy was an active member of his Sunday school class and Celebrate Recovery.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents as well as a brother, George, of Doniphan, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Dee; daughter Sheryl and husband Christopher Rush of Pendleton, Ore.; son Jeffrey and wife Susie Henning of Aledo, Tex.; grandson Evan and wife Julia Rush; granddaughters Elizabeth Rush and Savanna Faith Henning; and grandson Jacob Henning.
He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy "Dot" Stewart, of Carrollton, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm, Wednesday, Sept. 19, at First Baptist Church Owasso, 13307 E. 96th Street N. Viewing will precede at 10 am.
Burial will follow services in the Fairfax Cemetery at 4 pm with a reception afterwards Osage Nation Elder Nutrition building located at 401 S. 8th street in Fairfax.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home of Fairfax.
